The drivers were trapped in their vehicles and had to be extricated by emergency services. They were taken to hospital, one of them by air ambulance, and police described the injuries in both cases as serious.
The road conditions were quite bad, with slippery, muddy surfaces, but the investigation will have to show whether that was the cause of the accident, said police spokesperson Sophia Jiglind.
Both vehicles have been seized for a technical examination and the police have opened a preliminary investigation into gross negligence in traffic and causing bodily harm. No one has been charged with a crime at this time.
The road was completely closed for just over three hours during the extensive recovery work after the accident.
