Detroit fell into a two-goal deficit early, before Sandin-Pellikka reduced it in the first period.
Olympic qualifier Lucas Raymond didn't want to be outdone and equalized early in the second period. The home team, Detroit, then took over the game and scored the decisive 4–3 overtime goal via Alex DeBrincat.
Fabian Zetterlund, for the away team, also got a point, earning an assist on Ottawa's 1–0 goal.
