The two females, mother and daughter, are both expected to give birth to calves in May next year and live in a reserve on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia.
“The pregnancies of the two rhinos are not only good news for Indonesia, but also for the world,” an official from the Indonesian Forestry Ministry said in a statement.
The news gives hope for the future of the species, which, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, has fewer than 80 living individuals left. The species is found only in Indonesia.
