The attack took place in Blida, outside the capital Algiers, and an AFP source with insight described it as "terrorist events."
Two suicide bombers blew themselves up and died, the source said.
Footage reviewed by AFP shows two dead bodies at a street intersection in Blida. It is not clear from the footage whether more people were injured.
The Pope had arrived in Algiers a few hours earlier for the first papal visit to Algeria, and his plans do not appear to have been affected by the attack.
