Two Stolen Renoir Paintings Found Hidden Behind a Wall in Southern France

Two paintings by Auguste Renoir, stolen from a museum in southern France in September, have been found hidden behind a wall.

The paintings "Portrait of Madame Colonna Romano" and "Young Woman at the Well" were found on Thursday during a search of a home in the town of Clermont-l'Hérault in southern France. They are said to have sustained only minor damage, Le Monde reports.

Thieves broke into the museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer on Tuesday, September 8, and tried to escape with four works by Renoir. They were forced to abandon two of them during their escape. The value of all four paintings is estimated at nine million euros.

Last week, five people were arrested on suspicion of the art heist, and the main suspect was charged after DNA evidence linked him to the theft.

According to Marseille prosecutor Nicolas Bessone, investigators obtained information about the location of the stolen goods through interrogations.
