The two females, a mother and her calf, are expected to give birth in May next year and live in a reserve on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia.

“The pregnancy of the two rhinos is not only good news for Indonesia, but also for the world,” an official from the Indonesian Forestry Ministry said in a statement.

The news gives hope for the future of the species, which, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, has fewer than 80 living individuals left. The species is found only in Indonesia.
