The two men who escaped from custody in Borås are linked to serious crime. One of them belongs to the top tier within one of Gothenburg's criminal networks.

The two men escaped on Sunday morning from the detention center's exercise yard, and at 21:00 in the evening, they are still at large, according to the police.

One of the men, who is in his 25s and from Gothenburg, has been convicted of, among other things, instigating and assisting in serious violent crimes and is serving a multi-year prison sentence.

According to Göteborgs-Posten, he is a leading figure in the criminal network T-falangen. He was previously sentenced this year to 17 years and 10 months in prison for a long series of serious crimes.

Changed clothes

The man who is in his 30s has been convicted of arson to a multi-year prison sentence, according to the police on their website.

The escape occurred just before 9 am in connection with handling two parallel alarms on the detention center's exercise yard. And then the individuals have climbed over several fences of different types, says Charlotte Simonson, press chief at the Prison and Probation Service, to TT.

According to the police, they were wearing Prison and Probation Service clothes ("green soft pants and green top") at the time of the escape, but in a wanted notice that went out at 20:43, the police write that the men likely have changed clothes.

The men have not escaped from the prison in Borås, which has security class 2, but from the detention center that is located on the institution's premises, says Simonson.

We have no concrete information that there would be any danger to the public, but one should of course not intervene themselves if they were to see them, but rather contact the police, says the police's press spokesperson Christian Brattgård.

Train traffic stopped

Regarding the fact that at least one of the men is already serving a prison sentence, Hanna Andersson at the Prison and Probation Service says, without going into any individual case:

Unfortunately, we have a lack of space in the institutions and then it is so that sometimes people can be held at the detention center while waiting for a place at an institution.

"The highest priority right now is that these individuals should return to the Prison and Probation Service. What has happened is of course serious and should not be able to happen", comments Joakim Righammar, unit manager at the Prison and Probation Service's security department and head of the staff that handled the escape, in a written statement.
