That's where they were in their line of duty, says Johanna Carlefred, commander at the police's regional command center.

The men were out to collect ropes from the alpine competition Keb Classic, which was recently held in the area, according to STF's general secretary Maria Ros-Hjelm to P4 Norrbotten.

Mountain rescuers and rescue services were sent out to search for the two on Thursday, but due to bad weather, they could not reach the mountain. At 11:30 am on Friday, the mountain rescuers reported that the men had been found near Halspasset.

It's quite high up on Kebnekaise, on the west side, and it's steep. The weather was, as I understand, very good when they set out, but became very bad overnight in terms of wind and precipitation, says Johanna Carlefred to TT.

The police cannot disclose the cause of death.

I have no information about that, and that's what we'll try to figure out.
