Two people died of brain hemorrhages while waiting for surgery at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, P4 Väst reports.

Another patient suffered visual impairment when a tumor could not be operated on in time. All had been waiting more than five months, according to a review by P4 of the hospital's own Lex Maria reports from the past three years.

The long waits were partly due to a queue that formed during the pandemic.

This was compounded by a lack of key personnel in the operating rooms, mainly operating room nurses, says Magnus Brink, chief physician responsible for neuromedical care at Sahlgrenska, to P4.

The queue was longest in 2022 and 2023.

We are moving in the right direction. The operating queues have been significantly reduced, and it has been possible, in other ways, to operate on high-priority cases on time, says Brink.
