The accident occurred just before 2 p.m. between Hallsberg and Östansjö, south of Örebro. The police wrote on their website that the men, who are aged 25 and 55 respectively, were carrying out excavation work when a counterweight came loose from a machine and crushed the men.
They were taken to hospital by ambulance, but at 9 p.m. the police announced that the men had died from their injuries. Next of kin have been notified.
A preliminary investigation into two cases of manslaughter in a workplace accident has been opened. According to the police, this is a routine procedure to investigate how the accident occurred. There are currently no suspects.
Infrastructure Minister Andreas Carlson (KD) wrote on X that the accident occurred during railway work.
"Crisis support has been activated. My thoughts go out to relatives and colleagues," he wrote.
