Two fires are raging on the island of Salamis west of the Greek capital. Hundreds of residents and sunbathing visitors have been evacuated since the fires broke out at roughly the same time, according to the fire department.
"These are fires that are difficult to extinguish inside inhabited areas," fire department spokesman Yiannis Artopios told Greek television.
Two people have been found dead near a sandy beach, he said.
Throughout Greece, 34 fires broke out over the weekend.
In Spain, a soldier has died while extinguishing a major fire in Aragon.
Help from agriculture
The large fire in a natural area in eastern Belgium has, according to the Belga news agency, destroyed around 3,000 hectares.
The fire that started on Friday had grown to 800 hectares by Saturday morning and then grew very quickly. It is slowly moving towards the border with Germany, and is not under control.
The fire is being fought from the air with helicopters and firefighting aircraft – including two from Sweden – and from the ground, where farmers are helping to provide firefighters with water from a lake.
"Right now we have about 15 tractors queuing to fill up with water. We have moved our cows away and opened all our gates for them to come in," Jean-Pierre Robert, who runs a hotel on Lake Robertville, told AFP.
Three villages have been partially evacuated, including a village on the border with Germany.
Evacuation warning
On the other side of the border, residents of the town of Monschau have been warned that they may be forced to evacuate.
As of early Sunday evening, the fire is not believed to have reached the town limits, just under a kilometre from Belgium, but the authorities have drawn a "red line," and if the fire reaches there, several of the 12,000 residents will be forced to leave their homes, reports the newspaper Rhenische Post.
The larger fire that raged in Hürtgenwald, north of Monschau, earlier this weekend is, according to the authorities, under control, but extinguishing work is still ongoing, including with two helicopters.
