Two fires are raging on the island of Salamis, west of the Greek capital. Hundreds of residents and sunbathing visitors have been evacuated after the fires broke out at roughly the same time, according to the fire department.
"These are fires that are difficult to extinguish in inhabited areas," fire department spokesman Yiannis Artopios told Greek television.
Two people have been found dead near a sandy beach, he said.
