It was at 9:14 p.m. that police in Gothenburg were alerted to a car driving against traffic on the E20. About five minutes later, a head-on collision occurred between it and another car near the centre of Partille.
Two people were taken to hospital, and on Sunday morning police announced that they had died from their injuries.
The police are working to notify the relatives, but since none of the deceased are residents of Sweden, this is taking longer than usual.
According to information provided to Göteborgs-Posten, the car had been travelling at high speed and had crashed into the side of an oncoming taxi before the final head-on collision occurred.
The road was closed and only reopened at midnight. Police are investigating the incident as gross negligence in traffic.
