Two Chadian Soldiers Killed and Nine Injured in Clashes in Gold-Rich North

Two soldiers have died and nine have been injured in clashes between Chad's military and forces critical of the regime in the country's north, the military said on Thursday.

The clashes took place on Wednesday in Miski, a town in the Tibesti region of northern Chad.

The mountainous desert region borders Libya to the north and Niger to the west. Since gold was discovered there in 2012 and 2013, the area has been plagued by repeated bouts of tension and violence.

Crowds have flocked there in search of gold, while the Chadian government has granted several mining sites to large mining companies and has previously deployed the military to stop other interested parties.
