Two Candidates Emerge to Succeed Christine Lagarde as ECB President

Two candidates have thrown their hats into the ring to succeed Christine Lagarde as president of the European Central Bank (ECB).

Spaniard Pablo Hernández de Cos and Dutchman Klaas Knot have applied for the post, the Eurogroup announced in a press release.

Both are former heads of their countries’ central banks. Hernández de Cos is also the current head of the BIS, the central bank for central banks.

A decision on who will replace Lagarde, who will step down early on February 7, 2027, could be made in mid-December, a source told the AFP news agency.
