It is the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency that has decided on the sanction fees totaling almost 226 million SEK, according to a press release.
The decisions apply to Braathens International Airways and Braathens Regional Airways.
Both companies are bankrupt and in corporate restructuring, respectively.
"However, EU legislation (the Emissions Trading Directive) does not allow any exceptions to the obligation to surrender emission rights, regardless of the companies' financial situation," writes the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.
