A journalist at TV4 is prosecuted for buying sex. The man denies the crime and says it was part of a journalism job.

The purchase of sex is alleged to have taken place in November 2023, according to prosecutor Kristoffer Kågström. The man had contact with a female escort, stated that he wanted to buy sex and arranged a meeting for it, says Kågström. The man also withdrew 2,000 kronor in cash on the same day, according to the indictment.

The escort has made notes about this meeting afterwards, which suggest that there has been sexual intercourse, says Kågström to TT.

In the notes, the woman writes that she had sex on the occasion.

She has run an escort business to a relatively large extent and stated that she usually takes notes after a sexual contact for a possible future contact and keeps the information simply.

If a contact does not materialize, the woman does not make any notes at all, according to Kågström.

"At least surprised"

The journalist says that the incident was part of a journalistic assignment and that he was only supposed to talk to the woman when they met – a picture that is supported by the man's lawyer Henrik Olsson Lilja.

He had it sanctioned by his superiors. Moreover, we have asked the prosecutor to make additions, but instead the prosecutor brings charges, which we are at least surprised about, he says to TT.

Olsson Lilja means that there was no reason to bring charges if the additions had been made.

What kind of journalistic work is it about?

I unfortunately cannot go into details, it's source protection and more, it's a complicated situation, but it was sanctioned by his superiors, he says.

Has a sexual act been committed?

Absolutely not, it has not happened and not been sanctioned either.

Taken out of service

The woman has stated in an interrogation that she has not been interviewed by any journalist.

He had contact with this escort and had it under the pretext of being a potential sex buyer, but that he did it for journalistic purposes because he wanted to follow up on a possible news story that this escort was supposed to have knowledge of, says prosecutor Kristoffer Kågström to TT.

They have met but only had a shorter conversation where he has landed on that it is not possible to follow up on this news story.

TV4's communications director Karin Nyman writes in an email to TT that the person is taken out of service and that the legal process will now have its course.

"Just like we previously said, we can confirm that there has been a journalistic assignment. Otherwise, we have no further comments at this time", writes Nyman.
