Tusk Says Poland Thwarted Possible Provocation on Border With Kaliningrad

Poland has prevented what appears to have been an attempted Russian provocation, Prime Minister Donald Tusk says.

Shortly after midnight, Tusk was informed that “disturbing movements” had been spotted on Poland’s border with the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.

“We managed to prevent an attempted provocation - if that was indeed the intention,” he told reporters on Tuesday.

Few details are available, but Tusk mentioned people with flashlights in the border area, among other things.

Poland has recently stepped up security along its borders with Russia and Belarus. On Tuesday, Tusk confirmed that a special operation had been carried out in the border regions of Warmia-Masuria and Podlasie, with police and security forces responding to intelligence about an imminent sabotage attempt.

According to Tusk, there is intelligence indicating a possible incursion by armed men.
