53-year-old Yalcin thus replaces Italian Vincenzo Montella, who was fired in early October after Turkey lost all four of its opening matches in the Nations League.
Sergen Yalcin played 41 times for Turkey, scoring five goals, and was a member of the squads for the 1996 and 2000 European Championships. He spent most of his playing career at Besiktas, where he also had his longest coaching stint. He led the club to the 2020–21 league title.
