I was 72 years old when I took office and I explicitly decided then to join under that condition, says the Finland-Swedish author to Hufvudstadsbladet.
Tua Forsström took office as a member of the Swedish Academy in 2019. She says herself that there is no drama behind the decision to leave the work. Previously, it has not been possible to resign from the Academy on one's own initiative, only through death or exclusion could a member give up their seat.
The author says to Hufvudstadsbladet that the new rules regarding membership were what made her accept.
For me, it was an important starting point.
Tua Forsström was elected to the Swedish Academy on seat number 18, the place that poet Katarina Frostenson had to leave through exclusion. Her close connections to the convicted "cultural profile" were the epicenter of the Academy crisis.
The Friday evening's ceremonial gathering will be the last event where Tua Forsström participates.
