New Zealand lifts tsunami warning after strong South Island earthquake

The quake had a magnitude of 5.9, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

The New Zealand Emergency Management Agency (Nema) initially urged people to seek shelter on higher ground. The warning has since been lifted, advising people to be aware of "strong and unusual currents" along the coast.
