A severe earthquake occurred in the sea off eastern Russia during the night towards Saturday. A tsunami warning was issued – but could later be lifted.

The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.4 with the epicenter about 112 kilometers off the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky on the Kamchatka peninsula, according to the US Geological Survey USGS.

An American tsunami warning center, PTWC, assessed that the earthquake could cause "hazardous" waves mainly in coastal areas in Russia within a radius of 300 kilometers from its epicenter. At 6 o'clock Swedish time, the tsunami warning was lifted.

The earthquake is estimated to have occurred at a depth of 39.5 kilometers.

Also in July, the Kamchatka peninsula was hit by a series of powerful earthquakes.
