Residents in southern Mexico as well as Guatemala and El Salvador felt intense tremors, AFP reports. In Guatemala City, many evacuated their workplaces in the middle of the morning rush hour.

In El Salvador's capital, the national library was evacuated.

However, no damage has been reported immediately after the earthquake, writes Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on X.

The US weather agency NOAA immediately issued a tsunami warning for parts of the Pacific coast off Mexico and Guatemala after the quake, and people were urged to avoid beaches due to the risk of rising water levels.

The tsunami warning was later withdrawn.
