The tariffs will come into effect immediately after they have been announced, says White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt at a press conference and adds that she has just spoken to Trump about the matter.

The announcement will be made at 16:00 local time, or 22:00 Swedish time, according to the White House.

In addition to tariffs on car imports, Trump has mentioned tariffs on data chips, medicines, and timber.

Earlier, Trump and the White House have announced that the tariffs will be tailored to each individual country based on how much customs duties they impose on American imports and how high their VAT rate is.

Karoline Leavitt also says that Trump "is always open to other countries' leaders who call him about tariffs".

Corrected: An earlier version had an incorrect time indication for the announcement.
