The Washington DC pond has been plagued with algae blooms since 1922.

In 2012, the Obama administration spent $34 million, just over 325 million kronor at today's exchange rate, on a renovation. But the problems remained.

Trump ordered the dam to be renovated and the bottom repainted in "American flag blue" ahead of the United States' 250th anniversary celebrations.

It will look much more beautiful than it did in 1922 when it was built, Trump said, and he hired a contractor he said was cheaper than the authorities' proposal, writes Politico. The bill came to $14.2 million, around 136 million kronor.

Despite this, the algae have returned. They are now being treated with ozone and hydrogen peroxide, but experts describe the pond as a “perfect” environment for algae growth. On Thursday, ABC News reported that the new paint on the bottom has started to peel off.
