The lawsuit, filed in mid-December, accuses the BBC of producing a “false, defamatory, misleading, derogatory, provocative and malicious portrayal” of Trump, after the media company aired a documentary with a heavily edited speech by Trump from January 6, 2021, a week before the 2024 presidential election.
The edit, in which Trump's quote had been cut, gave the impression that Trump was directly calling for violence in the wake of the deadly storming of the U.S. Capitol.
Trump is demanding a total of $10 billion from the BBC, which has apologized but denied defaming him.
Correction: An earlier version of the text contained an incorrect time for the U.S. presidential election.
