Trump's Houthi Decision Impacts European Shipping Stocks

The shares of leading European shipping companies are plummeting. Decreased freight prices in the wake of President Donald Trump's promise earlier in the week to stop bombing Yemen, as the Houthi militia "has surrendered", are expected to drag down the profitability of the shipping companies.

Danish Maersk falls by 7.5 percent, but the entire sector is doing poorly in Wednesday's trading on European exchanges. German Hapag-Lloyd's share is at minus 5.7 percent and Norwegian Frontline is at minus 4 percent.

Attacks on shipping in the Red Sea have forced shipping companies to choose other routes and longer journeys for their transports and have also resulted in a risk premium on freight prices, which has increased profitability.

The Trump administration has, according to the Pentagon, the US defense headquarters, attacked over 1,000 targets in Yemen during Donald Trump's campaign against the Iran-backed Houthi militia in the country.

The US and allied countries bombed targets in Yemen also during Democrat Joe Biden's years as US president, in response to the Houthi militia's repeated attacks on civilian shipping in the Red Sea. The Houthi militia in Yemen has also been attacked in response to the movement's attacks on Israel.

The Houthi movement is said to have agreed, after the recent intense US bombings, not to attack ships in the Red Sea. The US will, in turn, not attack Houthi targets in Yemen, according to a statement from the mediating nation Oman.
