US President Donald Trump says he is "going to start dealing with Sudan" after the Saudi Crown Prince asked him for help in ending the war.

The statement comes at a US-Saudi investment conference in connection with Mohammed bin Salman's visit to the US.

"His Majesty wants me to do something very powerful that has to do with Sudan," says Trump, who is attending the conference with bin Salman.

The American president further says that he has not previously been interested in getting involved in the war.

But I see how important it is to you and to many of your friends in this room, Sudan. And we will start to deal with Sudan, says Trump.

The war in Sudan broke out in April 2023, as a result of a power struggle after a coup in the wake of the fall of long-time dictator Omar al-Bashir in 2019. The fighting is fueled by arms support to the parties from countries with different interests in Sudan.

The RSF armed group controls a number of state capitals in the western parts of the country, as well as territory in southern Sudan. The army, in turn, controls the lion's share of northern Sudan, as well as the eastern and central parts.

Both sides have been accused of serious abuses and war crimes, but many observers point to RSF's warfare as particularly brutal and ruthless.
