Trump Reportedly Weighs Pete Hegseth’s Future After Republicans’ Midterm Defeat

US President Donald Trump is reported to have asked his advisers whether Secretary of War Pete Hegseth should be allowed to leave his post after Republicans’ stinging defeat in the midterm elections.

Several senior sources told CBS News that Trump has discussed Hegseth's future in person and on phone calls with several close associates. They said the aim was to find a scapegoat for the Republicans' election fiasco.

There has previously been speculation that senior military officers Brad Cooper, who heads Central Command, and Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, would be sacrificed.

At the same time, Democrats have tried to impeach Hegseth, but Republicans postponed the move while they held a majority in the House of Representatives. The information about Hegseth's role as secretary of war comes as Vice President JD Vance claims that the Iran war was the main reason for the Republicans' election loss.
