– I have no message to President Putin. He knows where I stand and he will make a decision in some way. Whatever the decision is, we will be satisfied or dissatisfied with it, says Trump according to CNN and adds that ”things will happen” if the US is dissatisfied.
Calls after the summit
The comments were made on Wednesday local time, when Poland's President Karol Nawrocki visited the White House. Trump also confirmed that he will talk on the phone with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyj.
I will talk to him very soon and I know roughly what we will do ... I will talk to him in the coming days, so we'll see, said Trump.
According to the Élysée Palace in Paris, the phone call will take place at 2 pm, after the European summit hosted by President Emmanuel Macron and Britain's Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Also expected to attend the meeting are European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, NATO Chief Mark Rutte, and Finland's President Alexander Stubb in person. Sweden's Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (The Moderate Party) will participate digitally.
Not ready?
Getting an end to the war in Ukraine was one of Donald Trump's prominent campaign promises. In August, he held a summit with President Putin in Alaska, which ended without any direct agreements on Ukraine. Trump claimed, however, that Putin had agreed to a meeting with Ukraine's Zelenskyj, which later turned out to be unfounded.
President Trump says he remains ”realistic and optimistic” about getting a peace agreement, according to a phone interview with CBS News late on Wednesday. In it, he says he is ”closely monitoring” the two leaders' maneuvering when it comes to getting peace talks started.
I have seen it and I have talked about it with President Putin and President Zelenskyj. Something will happen but they are not ready yet, he says.
We will sort it out.
