Donald Trump will pardon former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández, who is being convicted in the United States of aiding and abetting drug trafficking.

The US president writes on his Truth Social platform that Hernández has been treated very harshly and unfairly "according to many people I respect a lot."

Hernández, president from 2014 to 2022, was sentenced last year to 45 years in prison and a multimillion-dollar fine. According to the verdict, he enlisted the help of the Honduran military and police to assist drug traffickers in smuggling tons of cocaine into the United States.

Trump's post is one of a number recently about Honduras' presidential election on Sunday, in which Trump claims that democracy in the Central American country is at stake and can only be saved if right-wing politician Nasry "Tito" Asfura wins.

The same Asfura lost the election four years ago to current president Xiomara Castro. Asfura had been handpicked as the Nationalist Party's candidate – by Juan Orlando Hernández.
