The UN is set to elect a new secretary-general in December when António Guterres steps down. Gianni Infantino is expected to be the replacement, at least if Donald Trump gets his way, the New York Post reports.
The president has long been critical of the UN and has sharply cut US contributions to the organisation.
According to the newspaper, Trump believes that Infantino is "respected by everyone around the world and has a special ability to bring people together" and therefore fits perfectly at the UN.
Infantino has not yet responded to questions about Trump's proposal. But the job would mean a substantial pay cut. According to the newspaper, he currently earns 78 million kronor a year, while at the UN his annual salary is 4 million kronor.
