President Donald Trump announces that the US will lift sanctions against Syria.
They have a new government that hopefully will succeed. I wish them good luck. Show us something extra, says in a speech during his visit to Saudi Arabia.
The announcement comes after the White House confirmed on Tuesday that Trump will meet Syria's new president Ahmed al-Sharaa in the Saudi capital Riyadh on Wednesday.
The President has agreed to say hello to Syria's president, says a White House source.
al-Sharaa led the Islamist movement Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham in the uprising that led to the al-Assad regime falling last year. He has previously urged the US to lift sanctions against the country, something Trump recently said he was considering.
