"The attacks target Iranian military capabilities used to threaten ships passing freely through the Strait of Hormuz," writes the US regional military command, Centcom, on X about the latest wave.
Centcom said a few hours earlier that the first wave of attacks today - which lasted 90 minutes - targeted defence systems on the Iranian-controlled island of Stora Tunb.
In parallel, the military command said that a US fighter jet - as part of the US naval blockade - fired on an oil tanker that sailed towards the island of Kharg in the Persian Gulf despite warnings. The Curaçao-flagged ship stopped after being hit in the funnel.
Several explosions were also heard on Wednesday evening when drones were shot down near the US consulate in Erbil in Iraqi Kurdistan, the AFP news agency reports. The consulate has previously been the target of attacks, mainly from pro-Iranian armed Iraqi groups, during the war.
Threats from Trump
Iran's Health Ministry says, according to news agencies, that at least 35 civilians have been killed and at least 300 injured in US attacks in recent days.
President Donald Trump threatens in an interview with Fox News that the United States will escalate attacks on Iran next week if no new agreement is reached.
"We will knock out all their power plants. We will destroy all their bridges if they don't come to the negotiating table," he said.
The US and Israel began the war at the end of February by killing Iran's leader Ali Khamenei. And Iran is now signalling that it wants to respond in kind. This week, giant posters have been put up in Tehran, showing Trump lying in a black coffin. Anti-American slogans are scrawled on the coffin, AP news agency images show.
"Destroyed" agreement
Iran's Revolutionary Guard has responded to the US blockade of Iranian ports with threats against all energy exports in the region.
"Oil and gas exports in the region are either for everyone or for no one," the statement read, according to Iranian state media.
Late Tuesday, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said on state-controlled television that the United States had "completely destroyed" the memorandum of understanding between the countries after the naval blockade was reimposed.
"The US has not only violated the memorandum of understanding. Through tonight's actions, the agreement has been completely destroyed," said Gharibabadi.
