European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Wednesday opened the door to making Canada the EU's first associate member, without going into details about what that would entail.
Trump is now threatening high tariffs on the EU if he judges that the bloc does not have good intentions - toward the US - in its cooperation with Canada.
"If I consider it to be in any way a hostile act, I will impose very high tariffs or cease trade with Europe," he says.
If they have good intentions, then it's okay.
However, the EU insists that it has no malicious intentions.
"Our partnership with Canada is not directed at anyone," writes trade spokesman Olof Gill.
