A dispute over water has led US President Donald Trump to threaten to raise tariffs on Mexico by 5 percent.

According to Trump, Mexico owes the United States the equivalent of approximately 987 million cubic meters of water from a water-sharing agreement between the countries.

"I have approved documents to impose a five percent tariff if this water is not released immediately," Trump writes on Truth Social, claiming that American farmers will suffer if they do not get their share of the water.

The agreement was signed in 1944 and involves the United States sharing water from the Colorado River while Mexico does the same with the flow of the Rio Grande, which is part of the border between the countries.

Trump demands that Mexico release a quarter of the water before the end of the year.
