Vietnam is the world's leading producer of robusta coffee, the type used in instant coffee and espresso. The country is the third largest supplier of coffee to the USA.

The 46 percent tariff on goods from the country, which is among the highest imposed by Trump against the USA's trading partners, risks further increasing the cost for coffee drinkers, who already pay high prices due to failed coffee harvests.

Nguyen Nam Hai, chairman of the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association, says he is "stunned" to see such a high tariff rate against Vietnam.

Everyone is worried, especially for the signed export contracts, he tells the news agency Bloomberg.

Vietnam also exports a lot of its coffee to, for example, Europe, which mitigates the potential tariff shock to the country's coffee industry.
