The two leaders discuss – according to the American president – the end of the war in Ukraine, as well as "large transactions for economic development" which, according to Trump, will take place between the USA and Russia.

"The talks are progressing very well" writes Trump on Truth Social.

A hint about what the large transactions might refer to came in connection with a TV-interview with Putin on Monday evening.

There, Putin states that Russia is ready to work with foreign partners, including Americans, to develop reserves of rare metals and earth metals – including "in our new regions".

According to AFP, the latter refers to the Ukrainian regions that Russia has annexed in violation of international law.

The question of metals is highly topical since the USA wants to conclude an agreement with Ukraine, where the USA will gain access to Ukrainian metals in exchange for the support the USA has given the country during Russia's war of aggression.

Trump is one of the few leaders in the Western world who has spoken with the war-crime-accused Putin after Russia's large-scale invasion of Ukraine three years ago.

Since he was re-elected as president, the USA and Russia have initiated talks about Ukraine, without Ukrainian or European presence.

In the TV-interview, however, Putin claims that Europeans can participate in the Ukraine talks.
