The statement came during an appearance in Phoenix on Friday local time, after the president claimed earlier in the day that Iran had agreed to hand over the enriched uranium.

"We will go in with Iran with lots of excavators," Trump said, referring to the remains of nuclear facilities bombed by the United States.

Iran has, however, dismissed the reports. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said, according to the semi-official Iranian news agency Tasnim, that "enriched uranium is as sacred to us as Iranian soil and will not be moved anywhere under any circumstances."

China may also enter the discussion. According to a source who spoke to AFP, Beijing would be willing to take over the approximately 440 kilograms of uranium that, according to the UN atomic energy agency, the IAEA, is enriched to 60 percent, or alternatively reduce the enrichment to levels that can be used for civilian purposes.
