"The US is working on a massive deal to buy potash from Belarus. The prices would be significantly lower than what we currently pay Canada. Very good news for our farmers and ranchers," the president writes on Truth Social.
The United States currently imports most of its potash - an old name for potassium carbonate - from Canada, but the neighbouring countries are currently embroiled in a trade war.
Belarus is a major producer of the commodity, but was hit with sanctions in 2021, halting exports to the US until 2025, when US sanctions were lifted in exchange for the release of political prisoners by Alexander Lukashenko's regime.
