U.S. President Donald Trump claims that the United States' defense budget in 2027 will be increased by 50 percent, equivalent to $500 billion.

“For the good of our country, especially in these very troubled and dangerous times, our military budget for 2027 should not be $1 trillion, but rather $1.5 trillion,” the president wrote in a post on Truth Social.

The enormous increase in spending will be financed through revenue from increased tariffs, according to Trump.

"This will enable us to build the 'dream military' we have long been entitled to and, more importantly, one that will keep us safe and secure, no matter the enemy," Trump wrote.

The US defense budget for 2026 is $901 billion.

An increase in the budget would need to be approved by Congress.
