Trump Says Russia and Ukraine Agree to Energy Ceasefire, but Moscow Has Not Confirmed a Deal

US President Donald Trump’s talk of an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine caused confusion. He is now trying to clarify the matter. “They are in agreement. They are in agreement because I said they are in agreement. This has to end,” Trump told reporters outside the White House.

Trump’s call for a ceasefire on Sunday came as news to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

“But if the Russians agree to an energy ceasefire, Ukraine will do the same,” he told Axios.

Russia has not confirmed that any agreement has been reached with Ukraine.

“The talks are continuing. When we have something to say on the issue, we will of course let you know,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told AFP on Monday.

Since Trump’s remarks on Sunday, several energy facilities in Ukraine have been attacked.

According to sources cited by the Financial Times, the Trump administration is threatening to halt a procurement system that supplies Ukraine with weapons if Zelenskyy continues to attack Russian energy infrastructure.

But that’s not something US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker can confirm.

“I am not aware of any changes to that program. The United States continues to sell equipment to our European and Canadian allies, who then supply it to Ukraine,” he told AFP.
