“Effective immediately, there is an energy ceasefire in the war between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties have agreed to this. Do not break it,” the president writes on Truth Social.
In an interview with Axios, Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky commented on the ceasefire, saying, “It’s news to me.”
But if the Russians agree to an energy ceasefire, Ukraine will do the same, he continues.
In a post on his Facebook page, Zelenskyy writes that Kyiv is “awaiting details from the American side,” and continues:
“Ukraine is always ready to take steps towards de-escalation, the protection of lives, and to make the decisions necessary to end the war and ensure a lasting peace.”
French President Emmanuel Macron writes in a post on X that France “unreservedly supports a genuine energy ceasefire that Ukraine is prepared to accept,” but also notes that Russia “has intensified its attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure in recent hours.”
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also took to X to express her support for Ukraine and “a ceasefire to protect global food supplies and energy infrastructure in Ukraine and Russia.” She also said she had spoken with Zelensky by phone.
Russia has not yet confirmed the deal.
