U.S. President Donald Trump said there will be no elections in Venezuela for the next 30 days. "We have to fix the country first," he told NBC.

Donald Trump claims to have control over Venezuela after a US attack on the country this weekend, in which President Nicolás Maduro was captured by US special forces.

In an interview with NBC, Trump says it will "take time" before an election can be held in Venezuela.

"It's not possible to hold elections. There's not even a way for people to vote," he says.

According to Trump, Venezuela's interim president Delcy Rodríguez has been cooperating with US officials after Maduro was removed from the country. He said a decision on whether to lift existing sanctions against her will be made soon.

Nicolás Maduro has been taken to New York to stand trial with his wife, Cilia Flores, accused of what the United States calls "narco-terrorism."
