Trump says mass deportations may have been “a little harsh” after midterm election defeat

Donald Trump says the harsh American policy toward migrants and the mass deportations that have drawn domestic criticism were “maybe a little harsh.” He made the comments in a television interview.

After the election on November 3, in which his Republican Party suffered a crushing defeat, the US president has shown few signs of wanting to heed voters’ wishes.

But in his first major interview since the midterm elections, with the CBS news magazine “60 Minutes,” he appears to criticize his own policies to some extent.

“I think they were too harsh. They were maybe a little harsh,” he says of the mass deportations of undocumented migrants.

The deportations, often carried out by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), have been heavily criticized, not least because federal agents have used excessive force and inhumane methods.

The protests peaked after two American citizens were killed in incidents involving border patrol agents. However, Trump has previously defended the efforts.

It is still unclear how self-critical Trump is in the CBS interview. The program will air overnight on Monday, Sweden time, and on Sunday only a short clip was released. In the second quote from the clip, Trump praises the gold he has ordered for the Oval Office.

On Friday, Trump replaced his chief of staff, Susie Wiles, with political hawk Stephen Miller, who takes a hard line on immigration. The change raised concerns that Trump would introduce even tougher policies toward undocumented migrants.

Over the weekend, he also published several posts on his Truth Social platform suggesting that the Democrats had committed election fraud.
