The attacks began at 11 p.m., local time in Sweden, on "orders from the commander in chief," Centcom wrote in a post on X with a reference to Trump.

"The mission is a proportionate response to unjustified Iranian aggression," the military wrote.

The announcement comes hours after Trump said Iran had shot down a US Apache attack helicopter, promising revenge.

"Two pilots were involved, both are safe and unharmed. Nevertheless, the United States must, of necessity, respond to this attack," Trump wrote on Truth Social.

The shooting down occurred in connection with a patrol over the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday night, according to the president.

It was already known that a helicopter had crashed in the area and that the pilots had been rescued. But the cause was unknown.

Hit by drone

The pilots were rescued near the coast of Oman with the help of a boat drone after around two hours and are in stable condition, Centcom wrote in a previous statement.

An initial investigation into the incident indicates that an Iranian drone hit the helicopter, two sources told CBS News. It was unclear whether the drone was deliberately aimed at the helicopter, the sources said.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi appeared to allude to the incident in a post on X.

“Foreign forces near our territory are at constant risk due to their own human errors, pure accidents, or potentially being caught in the crossfire,” he wrote, continuing:

“The best solution to reduce the risk is to leave.”

Warning from Iran

Araghchi, who attached a map image of the Strait of Hormuz, also wrote that Iran's military forces are constantly on guard against violations of the country's borders and airspace.

The Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, also issued a warning.

"We prefer the language of diplomacy, but we speak other languages more fluently. Break your commitments, and we will switch to what we speak best," he wrote on X and concluded:

“You ride the horse you saddled!”
