Powell has been criticized several times by Trump who has said that he wants to dismiss the Fed chief, whose mandate expires in May. The latest outburst from the president came in connection with a meeting with Powell. When asked if there is anything Powell could do to make Trump reduce the criticism of him, the president replied:
I would like to see him lower the interest rates.
Powell has previously stated that the president has no legal opportunity to fire him except on objective grounds.
