"Many things were discussed, many things were agreed upon. A total restart was negotiated in a friendly but constructive manner", Trump writes on his platform Social Truth on Sunday.

"We wish, for the well-being of both the US and China, that China opens up to American companies", Trump writes and concludes the post with "MAJOR PROGRESS HAS BEEN MADE!!!".

The negotiations are led by the US Finance Minister Scott Bessent and his Chinese counterpart, Vice Premier He Lifeng, and are expected to resume on Sunday.

Prior to the meeting in Geneva this weekend, US President Donald Trump made a statement where he opened up to reducing tariffs against China to 80 percent compared to the 145 percent that applies today.

The White House clarified afterwards that it cannot be a matter of any cuts without reciprocity from China.

China has responded to the tariffs by introducing its own tariffs of 125 percent on American goods.
