The ban applies to the television channels CNN and MSNOW (formerly MSNBC) as well as the news site Politico.
"Effective immediately," Trump writes on Truth Social.
The reason for the decision, according to Trump, is "their constant 'reporting' of fake news."
"Media should not be able to constantly write or report fiction and lies when covering the President of the United States, the Trump administration, or the United States," the president writes, partly in capital letters.
Trump adds that more media outlets may be covered by the decision.
“Getting tired of it”
At a later press conference in the Oval Office, Trump explains that this is not about any individual report, writes NBC News .
It's been building up over the last few years. You get tired of it.
When asked how he reconciles the measure with the First Amendment to the American Constitution - which, among other things, guarantees freedom of the press and speech - he answers:
I dislike dishonest press - like you.
CNN's communications department states in a statement that the channel's journalists have the right "under the U.S. Constitution to report without hindrance or interference from the government."
"If the ban threatened by President Trump becomes a reality, it would be an illegal attack on this fundamental and constitutionally protected right," it further states.
Chuck Schumer, the leading Democrat in the Senate, writes on X that Trump is doing what "dictators throughout history have done."
"This is a democracy. You will not be able to manipulate the news or hide the truth," Schumer writes.
Verbal attacks
Donald Trump's grudge against the media is well-documented. He often targets major media houses and launches harsh verbal attacks on individual reporters almost daily.
Previously, the American news agency AP was kicked out of the White House and the presidential plane as punishment for refusing to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico in its reporting. The AP has sued the White House in a lawsuit that is still ongoing.
Trump has also, when he has been dissatisfied with reporting, taken legal action in several cases, for example against The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and the British BBC.
