The President of the USA, Donald Trump, is expected to sign an executive order that from now on the Department of Defense will be referred to as the Department of War. The name will initially be a "secondary designation" since it requires a congress-approved law change to officially change the name.
The order will encourage the use of the new name and to address the Minister of Defense Pete Hegseth as the Minister of War.
Both Trump and Hegseth have expressed themselves positively to changing the name. The President said earlier in the week that he believes the change will get Congress's support.
I do not think we even need it, he said.
The name is a return to the department's first name, which was changed in 1949 to the Department of Defense.
