US President Donald Trump announces that he will lower the requirements for how fuel-efficient passenger cars must be in the country, CNBC reports.

Trump's new standard would mean that cars (on average) will be able to travel 14.5 kilometers on one liter of gasoline by 2031.

Former President Joe Biden, during his time in the White House, had tightened the requirement to 21.3 kilometers per liter by the same year.

"We are officially ending Joe Biden's ridiculously onerous, actually terrible, Cafe standards," Trump said at the White House in connection with a meeting with the CEOs of automotive giants Ford and Stellantis.

The standard known as Cafe has existed in the United States since 1975 and has been tightened over the years to ensure that vehicles use fuel more efficiently.
